Parc de la Brière: The Mysterious Black Country

The second-largest marshland in France after the Camargue, the Parc Naturel Régional de Brière is a fascinating aquatic universe made up of canals, reedbeds and wet meadows.

Barge trip: the silence of the marshes

The chaland, a traditional flat-bottomed boat, is the only way to get deep into the heart of the marsh. Guided by a boatman, glide along the water to observe some exceptional wildlife: grey herons, marsh harriers and white spoonbills. Silence is king here.

Kerhinet: the thatched-roof village

Don't miss a visit to the village of Kerhinet in Saint-Lyphard. Entirely restored, this pedestrian village features eighteen thatched cottages with typical reed roofs. It's a real open-air museum where you can discover the art of living of yesteryear and the work of local craftsmen.

An ecosystem to preserve

La Brière is also a story of people. In the past, peat was extracted here (the «black country»). Today, the park is a model of biodiversity conservation. Numerous interpretation trails and birdwatching observatories help visitors understand the fragility of this balance between water and land.
